I am the mother of Cruz Rich, the young man who was struck and killed by a car on Route 1A on Aug. 31. I am writing this letter for two reasons. First, to thank all the wonderful people who supported me and two other children during this horrific time. Second, to dispel many misconceptions and rumors that seem to be running rampant in the community.
I want to give thanks to my family who never left my side and held my hand while making very difficult decisions. Thanks to all my friends and the people in Hancock who loaded my refrigerator with food and who never hesitated to do whatever I asked of them. Thanks to my special friends of the Knot Hour Club who organized the gathering after the services and very special thanks to my friend Eileen who has been my rock. Thanks to all the people who have been supporting my two other children. Thanks to my co-workers for all their support and understanding. Thanks to all of Cruz’s friends who loved him and supported him.
I want people to know that my son did not have cerebral palsy as one local newspaper reported. The accident was not a hit and run. The unfortunate person who hit my son was not speeding nor was there any alcohol involved. This was a tragic accident, one of those things that just happen.
I miss my son terribly and am walking through this moment by moment. I am fortunate to be incredibly blessed with two other wonderful children, close family, and extraordinary friends who are there for me to lighten the burden.
