Bangor residents living in the Birch Hill Estates neighborhood on Broadway reported Monday to Manna Ministries food pantry director Bill Rae that high school-age youths had come to their house asking them for money for Manna.

“We never go door-to-door, and don’t encourage anybody or ask anybody to go door-to-door,” Rae said.

He wanted to make community members aware that there might be people out there trying to take advantage of them by illegally asking for funds.

“That’s the lowest of the low,” Rae said. He added that people shouldn’t give money to solicitors unless they know it’s a legitimate request.

Two burglaries that occurred over the weekend at the University of Maine are being investigated by campus police, according to UM spokesman Joe Carr.

A cash box was taken from a room in Boardman Hall that’s used by a student civil engineering group. The group runs a small-scale store where they sell snacks, Carr said. The box was taken sometime between Saturday evening and Monday morning.

The South Side Market at Stodder Hall also was broken into and the cash register was stolen.

Police aren’t saying whether any cash was taken in either incident.

A former University of Maine student found himself in trouble with the law again after failing a drug test, according to UM spokesman Joe Carr.

Zakaria M. Yousaf, 18, of Portland previously was charged with wielding a knife during an off-campus Halloween party that allegedly left small cuts on the cheek of a Husson College student. He was out on bail when he was called in Sunday to the UM Public Safety Department.

A juvenile who had been brought in for allegedly trying to steal food from the UM Market Place had Yousaf’s UM identification in his possession. Police called Yousaf to come to the station and retrieve the ID, but when he arrived, police noticed the smell of marijuana.

As part of his bail conditions, Yousaf was subject to search and testing. UM police took him to the Bangor Police Department where he tested positive for marijuana.

Yousaf was summoned for violation of conditions of release. (Aimee Dolloff, BDN).
