ORONO – The University of Maine women’s hockey team received another stellar goaltending performance from junior Genevieve Turgeon Tuesday night, but Boston University edged the Black Bears 3-2 on Whiteout Night at Alfond Arena.

Terriers junior left wing Erin Seman scored with 7:04 remaining to break a 2-2 tie.

BU goalie Allyse Wilcox made a great save seconds after Seman’s goal to preserve the win.

Turgeon finished with 37 saves and Wilcox wound up with 11.

Turgeon made 13 Grade-A (high-percentage) saves among her 37 and Wilcox made nine.

Seman scored off a two-on-one with Melissa Anderson.

Anderson broke down the right wing and slid the puck across to the unmolested Seman, who cut from left to right across the top of the crease and tucked the puck behind the helpless Turgeon.

“I pull that move all the time on our goalies in practice, but I never score on it,” said Seman. “I wanted to make [Turgeon] move. I wanted to make her do something. I pulled it around her and put it in.”

Seman said if she executes it properly, it results in an “easy tap-in.” She also credited Anderson with making a perfect pass.

“I knew she’d give it to me at the right time. I trust her,” said Seman.

“I expected her to one-time it,” said Turgeon. “I should have read the play better.”

Maine coach Dan Lichterman said one of his players chased the puck in the offensive zone and abandoned her weak-side coverage, which resulted in the two-on-one.

Shortly afterward, Amy Stech skated down the right side and snapped the puck across to the unattended Taryn Peacock at the far post. Peacock one-timed it, but Wilcox anticipated the pass and scampered over to make the save.

“I have no idea where the goalie came from,” said Peacock. “She got her glove on it.”

Wilcox said, “I read the play and was able to get over in time.”

“Allyse makes real good saves when we need them,” said Anderson.

BU, which snapped a three-game losing streak, improved to 3-8-2 overall, 1-2 in Hockey East. Maine fell to 1-12-1 and 0-4-1, respectively. Maine is now winless in its last 13 (0-12-1) and has lost 10 in a row.

BU took a 2-0 lead on a pair of power-play goals, but Maine answered with a shorthanded goal by Jennie Gallo and Peacock’s power-play goal.

Nicki Wiart scored with 1:03 left in the first period and Sarah Appleton expanded the lead 8:18 into the second period.

The Bears had a golden opportunity to grab a lead and the momentum in the first minute of play when Peacock put a pinpoint pass ahead to Vanessa Vani for a clean breakaway.

Vani looked up and pulled the puck to her left, but shanked her shot and it hit the side of the net.

BU slowly took control of the period shortly afterward and, thanks to five Black Bear penalties, the Terriers peppered Turgeon.

Turgeon was superb in keeping the game scoreless until Wiart finally beat her.

A shot from the point sailed wide, and Wiart tracked it down behind the Maine net and quickly darted to the net front. She swiped at the puck and it glanced into the short side off Turgeon’s pad.

Maine took a penalty in the aftermath and Lauren Cherewyk broke in alone on the ensuing faceoff, but Turgeon closed her pads and made the save.

BU outshot Maine 15-2 in the first period.

Maine got into more penalty problems in the second period and Appleton made them pay.

Cherewyk slid the puck back to her at the midpoint and Appleton’s slap shot deflected off a Maine stick and over Turgeon’s glove.

The Terriers went on another power play, but Gallo cut the lead in half after the Bears blocked a shot at the point.

The puck carried down into the right corner where Robyn Law tracked it down and threw it across to Gallo, who redirected it past Wilcox’s left side.

Peacock tied it when she took a pass out of the corner from Vani, sliced right to left across the slot and beat Wilcox with a wrist shot to the short side.

It wasn’t quite enough, though.

“We didn’t do the things we needed to do,” said Lichterman. “We didn’t do the little things like win the wall battles and move our feet without the puck.”

Maine senior defenseman and assistant captain Kim Meagher echoed her coach’s sentiments.

“We didn’t work hard enough. We didn’t play as a team. We had a hard time getting the puck out of our zone,” said Meagher.

BU coach Brian Durocher thought his Terriers, in their third year of varsity existence, played pretty well.

“You’ve got to give Maine credit for capitalizing on their chances and getting back in the game. They made our job tougher,” said Durocher.

“[Turgeon] played a great game. We peppered her,” said Seman.

For Whiteout Night, the first 300 fans who wore white received a free T-shirt. Three hundred forty showed up.

BU right wing Holly Lorms was taken off the ice on a stretcher in the second period with a wrist injury after a collision with a Maine player in the second period.
