Corbeau winner of DIFW giveaway Fish restoration set Dec. 13 in Bangor

Roland “Dan” Martin, the Commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, presented a handcrafted Rangeley guide boat to Pierre Corbeau of Portland on Wednesday.

Corbeau qualified to win the boat by purchasing his fishing license on-line at www.mefishwildlife.com. The DIF&W offers an annual prize incentive to encourage customers to use the MOSES electronic licensing system to buy licenses, enter the moose-permit lottery, or apply for an any-deer permit.

In 2006 the grand prize was a refurbished 1957 warden truck.

“The MOSES system and on-line purchasing have provided greater convenience for our customers, and has saved the department tens of thousands of dollars in costs associated with the administrative expense of manual paper licensing,” Martin said.

Customers who use the MOSES system can access their account any time, day or night, and can print multiple copies of their license. Those copies can be conveniently placed in boats, fishing vests, vehicles or hunting apparel.

“The costs incurred for the prizes and managing the contest are generated by sales of the department’s logo merchandise,” Martin said. “These funds are specifically earmarked for promotion and are surprisingly minimal compared to the combined savings achieved in converting customers to the MOSES system.”

Fish restoration session set

Three state entities will combine to hold a public scoping meeting to discuss the interagency Strategic Plan for the Restoration of Diadromous and Resident Fishes to the Penobscot River.

The Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission, the Maine Department of Marine Resources and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife will host the meeting Dec. 13 in Mathews Auditorium at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor. The meeting will run from 6-8 p.m.

The plan presents a long-term vision for restoration actions for multiple species over the next 25 years through the identification of shared goals, objectives and strategies for restoration, recovery and management of multiple fish species and ecosystem processes.

The purpose of the meeting is to inform stakeholders of the content of the plan and to discuss the plan and steps that will follow.

The meeting is not a public hearing or part of a formal public comment period. It is informational and an opportunity to provide feedback to the state agencies.

Copies of the plan are available at www.maine.gov/asc and at www.maine.gov/dmr and hard copies will be available at the meeting.

Comments on the plan can be sent to melissa.laser@maine.gov or Melissa Laser, Department of Marine Resources, Bureau of Sea Run Fisheries and Habitat, 21 State House Station, Augusta, 04333.
