Trafton sparks Central Devils stop MDI in season-opener

BAR HARBOR – Rachel Trafton went 12-for-18 from the free-throw line en route to 18 points and a 55-45 schoolgirl basketball win for the Red Devils over the Mount Desert Island Trojans Saturday.

Trafton scored nine points in the second quarter as Central took an 11-point lead. Rebecca Campbell chipped in with 10 points.

Megan Phelps paced the Trojans with 15 points and seven rebounds. Sara Carroll added 13 points.

Samantha Gormley and Morgan Chasse had 10 points apiece for the winners and Eve Jordan had seven.

Sarah Porter’s nine points and Kayla Legassie’s six led Presque Isle.

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Craig Buxton scored an unassisted goal 1:26 into the third period to break the 1-1 tie and lead Houlton-Hodgdon past Bangor.

Morgan Hall scored an unassisted goal 18 seconds into the third to tie it for 1-0 Houlton-Hodgdon. Malik Abouliesh stopped 28 shots.

Nate Lewis scored 8:45 into the second period on assists from Joey Seccareccia and Bill Frost for 0-1 Bangor. Andrew Riley stopped 14 shots.

At Presque Isle, Dylan Collins scored three goals to lead Presque Isle by Old Town.

Zac Campbell assisted on all three of Collins’ goals. Mark Carbell, Brennen Shaw and Parker Hovey each added a goal. Brandon Daigle had two assists while Jason Martin had one. Ethan Hill stopped 18 shots for the 1-0 Wildcats.

Cody Cross, Ryan Daniel and Jason Smith each scored a goal for Old Town while Pat Singer posted an assist. Cameron Washburn made 14 saves for the 0-1 Coyotes.
