Cote lifts MMA to win Southern Maine, Bowdoin record victories

CASTINE – Elizabeth Cote of Brewer scored 21 points to the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners to a 61-38 women’s basketball win over the Thomas College Terriers Saturday.

Megan Franklin had 10 rebounds with her seven points for the Mariners.

Lea McNary had 11 points and nine rebounds for Thomas and Cortney Barrett scored 10 points.

Bengal Holiday Classic

At Fort Kent, Erica Scott had 24 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to help lead the University of Maine at Presque Isle to the 60-51 win over York College in the Bengal Holiday Classic Saturday. UM-Fort Kent also beat York 70-56 Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Megan Korhonen had 14 points and six assists for UM-Presque Isle and Julie Wescott added 10 rebounds and seven points.

Maimouna Dabo led York with 13 points and seven assists.

In Sunday’s game, Ashley Ames paced UM-Fort Kent with 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Alisa Licata scored 14 points and Shir Fuchs had eight points and 11 assists.

Delores Maeweather and Dabo each scored 16 points.

Tashauna Ashmeade led UMass Dartmouth with 15 points.

At Biddeford, Marissa Hesketh and Allie Gamache combined for 23 second-half points as the University of New England erased a 43-31 halftime deficit to post the triumph.

Hesketh had eight points during a 16-3 run that snapped a 48-48 tie and gave UNE the lead for good.

Gamache had 15 points for UNE and also had four assists and three steals. Katie Diggins and Hesketh had 14 points each and Diggins grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while dishing out four assists.

Sara Pelkey had 10 points.

Caitlyn Laflin’s game-high 20 points and nine rebounds paced UM-Farmington. Samantha Wiley and Amanda Byrne had 13 points each and Ashley Busque had 12 to go with nine rebounds. Byrne and Wiley had four assists each.

At Canton, N.Y., Marianna Locke and Alison Domenico each scored two goals to power St. Lawrence by Maine.

Lisa Batchelor, Carson Duggan, Chelsea Grills, Jordan Pyers and Sabrina Harabec each added a goal. Meaghan Guckian made 23 saves for 13-3-0 St. Lawrence.

Robyn Law scored the lone goal for Maine. Genevieve Turgeon tallied 25 saves for the 1-16-2 Black Bears.

Men’s basketball

Bowdoin 75, Colby 72

At Waterville, Kyle Jackson scored a game-high 21 points including a clutch lay-up with 49 seconds remaining as Bowdoin staved off a ferocious Colby rally to edge its arch-rival 75-72 in a college basketball game Saturday night.

Bowdoin used a 73 percent shooting performance to build a 52-31 halftime lead but Colby rallied to within one before Jackson’s lay-up gave the Polar Bears some breathing room.

Colby missed three potential game-tying three-pointers.

Andrew Hippert had 14 points for the winners and Andrew Sargeantson added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds and six assists.

Mac Simpson’s 19 points and four assists paced Colby. Adam Choice had 15 points and six assists and Artie Cutrone had 12 points. Michael Russell and Mark Gaudet added 10 points each.

Simpson also had eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

Johnnie Jefferson and Isaac Stickney had 13 points apiece for the winners and Chas Rentrope haad 12 more.

Jefferson grabbed 11 rebounds and Stickney had eight.

Sean Fry’s game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds powered the Beavers. Isaac Hutchinson and Matt St. John had 13 points apiece and Hutchinson had a team-high four assists.

Andrew Duncanson had 25 points with four assists and two steals to lead Thomas. Michael Burchill had 16 points and seven rebounds.
