3 charged with OUI in separate incidents

BELFAST – Local police charged three men with drunken driving in separate incidents over the weekend.

Patrolman Michael Rolerson was in the right place at the right time at an accident scene Friday night when he arrested two drivers.

Rolerson was on patrol in his cruiser at approximately 11 p.m. when he observed a red sport utility vehicle drive by, according to the police report. The driver attempted to evade the cruiser and turned onto Front Street, police said. By the time Rolerson caught up to the vehicle it was off the road and in the ditch. A second vehicle also was in the ditch, and Rolerson initially surmised that the SUV had caused an accident.

When he walked over to investigate, he determined that both vehicles had skidded off the road on their own because the drivers were impaired, according to the police report.

Keith Clark, 28, of Belfast, driver of the SUV, was arrested and charged with operating while under the influence of intoxicants and operating a defective motor vehicle.

Matthew Jameson, 23, of Orrington was arrested and charged with operating while under the influence of intoxicants. At the time of the arrest, Jameson was not wearing shoes, Police Chief Jeffrey Trafton said Monday. Both men were taken to Waldo County Jail.

The next night, Officer Ryan Nickerson was on routine patrol on Main Street when he observed a vehicle drive through a flashing red light at 11:25 p.m. The driver, Randall I. Smith, 42, of Liberty, was placed under arrest and charged with operating while under the influence of intoxicants, possession of a usable amount of marijuana and sale or use of drug paraphernalia, according to the police report.
