ORONO – Kaimondre Owes scored 19 points to lead the University of Maine past the University of Maine-Augusta 109-69 in an exhibition basketball game at Alfond Arena Friday night.
The Black Bears shot a scalding 70.7 percent from the field against the UMA Moose, who are currently ranked 10th nationally among United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II teams.
Owes, a junior transfer guard from St. Peter’s College, also had four assists in 24 minutes of play. Sophomore forward Jordan Cook of Hampden scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore guard Junior Bernal had 13 points and five assists. Freshman forward Troy Barnies of Auburn finished with 12 points for the 4-7 Black Bears. Maine returns to regular season action Monday with an afternoon road game against Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.
Junior guard Jason Hight provided seven points and a game-high six assists off the bench for the Bears.
For the 7-4 Moose, junior guard Deon Cheers led the way with 21 points and five rebounds. Senior forward Chad Gray chipped in with 17 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Tristan Starbird from Farmingdale had 16 points.
The Moose shot 43.8 percent from the field while outrebounding the Bears 34-33 overall in the first game between the two teams. Both teams committed 13 turnovers.
Ithaca 101, Colby 91
At Daytona Beach, Fla., Sean Burton scored 33 points to lead Ithaca College past Colby College of Waterville in the Land of Magic Classic.
Sean Leahy had 18 points for Ithaca and Jeff Bostic added 16 points.
Adam Choice led Colby with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Mac Simpson scored 17 points and Michael Russell had 14 points. Mark Gaudet chipped in 12 points.
