BAR HARBOR – Local fire officials quickly extinguished a structure fire Wednesday in the downtown village but had to call the State Fire Marshal’s Office after being unable to determine how it started.

The blaze at McFarland Court, off Holland Avenue, was reported a few minutes before 2 p.m., according to Fire Department Capt. Matt Bartlett. He said there was fire damage on the first floor of the home, located behind the Irving Mainway on Cottage Street, and smoke damage to the second floor.

“We kept it contained to the floor of origin,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett said firefighters were unsure where on the first floor the fire began.

He said about 20 local firefighters worked at the scene and had the fire extinguished in about 15 minutes. A woman, whose name Bartlett did not know, was home at the time of the fire but there were no injuries, he said. He said he did not know the monetary estimate of the damage or if the house is insured.

The Red Cross was called and is offering assistance to the displaced tenant, Bartlett said.

The Fire Department closed the northern block of Holland Avenue for about an hour while firefighters were at scene.
