USM wins its tourney title Maine Maritime beats UMPI in consolation game

GORHAM – Shannon Kynoch scored 17 points to help lead the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team past Clark University 84-45 to win the championship game of the Southern Maine Invitational Saturday.

Maine Maritime Academy beat the University of Maine-Presque Isle 68-44 in the consolation game.

In the championship game, Josalee Danieli scored 15 points for the Huskies and Becky Dixon added nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Nicole Paradis and Dawn Ross scored 11 points apiece.

Jillian Camilleri led Clark with 10 points.

In the consolation game, Megan Franklin paced MMA of Castine with 18 points and Brittany Hunt scored 13 points. Ashley Tilton had eight rebounds and four steals.

Erica Davis scored 11 points for UMPI and Megan Korhonen had six assists and three steals with her seven points.

At Biddeford, Andrew Duncanson poured in 23 of his game-high 33 points in the first half as the Thomas College Terriers beat the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls Saturday in the consolation game of the Jim Beaudry Classic.

Michael Burchill had 23 points, Isaiah Brathwaite added 14 points and Scott Peters scored 10 for Thomas.

Ronald Spencer tossed in 26 points for the Owls. James Gregory scored 23 and Felix Agboola added 11.

Wesleyan won the tournament title with a 69-61 victory over host University of New England.

Duncanson and Spencer were named to the all-tourney team with Johnnie Jefferson and Jaykyri Simpson of UNE, and Michael Raymond of Wesleyan. Nick Pelletier of Wesleyan was the MVP.

Maine Maritime drops two

At Hartford, Conn., Sam Simmons had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute past Maine Maritime Academy of Castine 80-72 in the Trinity Invitational consolation game Sunday. Trinity College beat the Mariners 95-52 on Saturday.

Trinity won the championship game 85-77 over Eastern Connecticut State University.

In Sunday’s consolation game, Derek DiFrederico led Maine Maritime with 18 points and six assists. Michael Wharf scored 16 points and Neil Stewart had 14 points.

In Saturday’s game, Russ Martin led Trinity with 17 points.

Stewart had a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds for the Mariners. Adam Haskell added 12 points.

At Washington, Pat Halloran scored a career-high 25 points to lead Bates College by Catholic University in the championship game of the CUA Classic Sunday.

Halloran shot 8-for-12 from the floor, including 7-for-11 from 3-point range. Bryan Wholey added 18 points for the Bobcats and was named the tournament MVP while joining Halloran on the all-tournament team.

Evin Yarbrough led Catholic U. with 17 points while Wes Parker added 13.

Bates advanced to the final with a 69-53 win over City College of New York Saturday. Wholey’s 18 points paced the Bobcats. Chris Wilson of Brewer contributed 10 points, including seven in a 19-2 run in the second half, to go with four rebounds and three assists. Jimmy O’Keefe added 10 points.
