PORTLAND – Six Maine women will be given Deborah Morton Awards at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Ludcke Auditorium on the University of New England’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland.

Kennebunk Historian Joyce Kelley Butler, Bangor business leader Jean M. Deighan, Isle Au Haut writer Linda Greenlaw, former legislator Merle Royte Nelson of Falmouth, and Bar Harbor scientist Beverly J. Paigen will be honored.

Bangor novelist Tabitha King will also be presented with a Deborah Morton Award.

The Deborah Morton Awards are presented each year by the trustees of the University of New England to outstanding women who have achieved high distinction in their careers and public service and whose leadership in civic, cultural or social causes has been exceptional.

The award was established in 1961. Named after Deborah Morton of Round Pond, valedictorian of the 1879 class of Westbrook Seminary, the award has been distributed to more than 120 women. The public is invited to the convocation, but seating is limited and on a first-come basis.
