BAILEYVILLE – A 63-year-old Eastport woman was listed in critical condition at a Bangor hospital Monday after the car she was driving sideswiped two tractor-trailers and landed in a ditch Sunday afternoon.
Around 2:50 p.m. Sunday, Baileyville police received a report that a red vehicle was driving erratically on Route 9. At the time of the report, the vehicle was in Wesley and traveling toward Baileyville, Baileyville Police Chief Phil Harriman said Monday.
Police responded.
About 15 minutes later, the Regional Communication Center in Machias notified Baileyville police that there was a three-vehicle crash near the Nook and Cranny Restaurant in Baileyville, Harriman said.
When police arrived, they found that a red 2005 Honda Element had crossed the centerline and sideswiped two tractor-trailers that were headed west to Bangor.
Sandra Scott, the driver of the Honda, was removed from the wreckage and taken by Baileyville ambulance to Calais Regional Hospital with unknown injuries. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
Calais hospital officials said Monday the woman was stabilized and then taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
EMMC officials said late Monday afternoon that Scott remained in critical condition.
Neither the driver of the 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer, Thomas Sinclair, 58 of Glenwood, Nova Scotia, nor the driver of the 2004 International tractor-trailer, Kevin Abbott, 44, of Springhill, Nova Scotia, was injured.
Harriman said the accident remained under investigation. He said police did not believe alcohol was a factor.
The Alexander, Calais and Princeton fire departments along with Downeast EMS assisted at the scene. The Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police assisted with traffic control.
