Purcell named AHL All-Star game MVP

Former University of Maine right winger Teddy Purcell was chosen the Most Valuable Player in the American Hockey League All-Star game Monday night as he became just the fourth player in All-Star game history to notch a hat trick.

In addition, he decided the game by scoring in a shootout for Team Canada in its 9-8 win over Planet USA in Binghamton, N.Y. Purcell was the Hockey East Rookie of the Year last season and plays for the Manchester Monarchs.

Two other former Black Bears, Greg Moore and Jimmy Howard, played for Planet USA. Moore didn’t register a point, and Howard made 12 saves on 15 shots. Moore plays for Hartford and Howard for Grand Rapids.
