Buzzer-beater by Cannan lifts Owls to victory

LIMESTONE – Michael Cannan drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Madawaska boys basketball team earned a last-second 44-42 victory over Limestone/Maine School and Science and Mathematics Thursday night.

DeeJay Gendreau led Madawaska with 18 points. Adam Desrosier chipped in with 10 points for the Owls.

Caleb Foster paced LCS/MSSM with 13 points. Matt Enman added 10 points for the Eagles.

At Bangor, senior guard Jon McAllian scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter as undefeated Bangor rallied from a one-point halftime deficit to earn its 27th consecutive victory.

Brewer led 21-20 at intermission before McAllian and senior guard Lee Suvlu combined for all of Bangor’s points in the third quarter as the Rams outscored the Witches 17-5 to take a 37-26 lead.

Billy Zolper added 10 points for 17-0 Bangor, while Ryan Weston grabbed seven rebounds.

Billy Bissell led 6-12 Brewer with nine points, while Nate Carson had five blocked shots.

Ashland 61, Katahdin 52

At Ashland, Jeremy Tarr led three Hornets in double figures with 19 points as they knocked off Katahdin of Stacyville.

Lucas Belanger netted 14 points and Tyler Cote 11 for Ashland.

Evan McCarthy paced the Cougars with 16 points while Ethan Qualey added 12 and Josh Guiggey 11, respectively.

Ciomei added 14 rebounds and five assists; Eben Powers also had a double-double for the Mariners with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Kevin Caldwell led Bangor Christian with 14 points, including four 3-pointers while Brett Bradford hit four 3’s for 12 points.

At Brewer, the Witches held the Rams to 12 points through three quarters en route to Brewer’s first win over rival Bangor in at least four seasons.

Senior Katie Kenney paced a balanced offense with 11 points. Meghan McLain added nine, including a 23-footer that gave the 7-11 Witches a 9-3 lead at the start of the second quarter.

Sheri Valley and Leah Jackson each added seven points.

Brewer’s man-to-man defense limited Bangor to one field goal on 13 attempts in the first half as the Witches had an 18-6 halftime lead, then outscored the Rams 12-6 in the third quarter.

McLain hit a 3-pointer after halftime, followed by a Jackson free throw and a Kenney basket in a 6-0 run. Bangor’s Allie Clukey put back a rebound to end Brewer’s streak but Kenney made a short jumper for a 26-8 lead.

Brooke Hackett led 13-4 Bangor with seven points.

At Lincoln, Michelle Paul scored 20 points, including a 10-for-11 effort from the free-throw line, as Mattanawcook Academy earned its 15th win.

Brianna Hanscom added 15 points for the Lynx.

Megan Phelps led Mount Desert Island with 14 points.
