Wilson lifts Bates men by Bowdoin Thomas, USM, Maine Maritime, Husson women record victories

BRUNSWICK – The Bates College Bobcats finished the game with a 7-0 scoring run to rally to a 65-62 men’s basketball win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears Saturday.

Bates has clinched the fifth seed in the NESCAC Tournament.

Chris Wilson of Brewer led the Bobcats with 20 points. Bryan Wholey had 13 points and Pat Halloran added 10.

Jordan Fliegel led the Polar Bears with 17 points and Andrew Hippert added 15.

At Waterville Saturday, Colby College clinched a spot in the New England Small College Athletic Conference playoffs with the win over the Jumbos.

Adam Choice scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the first half for the Mules. Mark Gaudet of Bingham scored 19 and Artie Cutrone chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Jake Weitzen led Tufts with 15 points and six rebounds. Jeremy Black scored 13 points.

At Waterville Saturday, the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 59.6 percent from the field overall en route to the victory.

Isaac Hutchinson of Oakland led the Beavers with 11 points and Patrick Howell of Nobleboro added 10.

Andrew Duncanson of Westbrook finished with 21 points for the Terriers.

At Providence Saturday, the University of Southern Maine’s Drew Coppenrath scored a game-high 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep Rhode Island College from winning.

Tirrell Hill scored 18 points for RIC. Cameron Stewart added 17 points and Kaseem Johnson added 12.

Jamaal Caterina had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies. Greg Whitaker scored 14 points.

Jesus Trejo had 13 points and nine rebounds for Lesley. Joseph Chatman and Mark Stevens scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Neil Stewart had 12 points and eight rebounds while Chad Paddock added 10 points for the Mariners.

UMFK wins two

The University of Maine-Fort Kent picked up a pair of wins with an 80-68 victory over SUNY-Canton at Potsdam, N.Y., on Saturday and a 71-61 win over Paul Smith’s College in Paul Smiths, N.Y. on Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Gediminas Sumyla led UMFK with 19 points and eight assists. Othniel Hyliger tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds while Hamill Bassue added 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Bengals.

In Sunday’s game, Jimmy Lopez and Sumyla led the Bengals with 14 points apiece. Bassue posted 11 points while Yair Gal chipped in with 10.

At Greenville, N.C., Sunday, the University of Maine softball team played extra innings, but could not secure its first win of the season as Ohio University scored a run in the ninth to outlast the Black Bears.

Maine’s Alexis Souhlaris (0-2) gave up one earned run, five hits and two walks in just her second collegiate start.

Ashley Waters, Terren Hall and Erin Iandoli each had two hits to lead the Black Bears. Whitney Spangler had an RBI single in the eighth.

Maine is now 0-5.

Women’s basketball

Thomas wins a pair

At Waterville, Karen Demers scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half as Thomas College held off the University of Maine-Farmington 70-67 on Saturday. Thomas defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 63-48 on Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Lea McNary led Thomas with 16 points and eight rebounds. Amy Miles and Cortney Barrett contributed 13 and 11 points respectively.

Ashley Busque paced UMF with 15 points and eight rebounds. Erin Johnson added 12 points for the Beavers.

In Sunday’s game, Kellie Martel scored 12 points including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc to lead Thomas College by UMPI. Lea McNary chipped in with 10 points for the Terriers.

Erica Davis led UMPI with a game-high 18 points and 15 rebounds.

USM 70, Rhode Island College 51

At Gorham, Stacey Kent tallied 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists to lead nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine by Rhode Island College.

Angela Santa Fe led the Huskies with 19 points while Josalee Danieli added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Tyla Martin paced Rhode Island College with 15 points off the bench.
