UMFK claims Sunrise crown

SOUTH PORTLAND – Arcilla Jeffers scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds Saturday to propel No. 1 UMaine-Fort Kent into the Sunrise Conference title contest.

The Bengals then claimed the conference championship Sunday, beating SUNY Canton 70-65 at Southern Maine Community College.

Ashley Ames registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Shir Fuchs tallied 14 points.

Irene Tompkins led No. 3 College of St. Joseph with 113 points and 11 rebounds.

At South Portland, Megan Davis scored 18 points as top-seeded SUNY Canton knocked No. 4 UMaine-Machias out of the Sunrise Conference tournament in the semifinals.

Sara Wells set the tone for the Clippers with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jennie Hare added nine points and eight rebounds.

At Waterville, Lea McNary scored 13 points Saturday to pace Thomas College to victory over Bay Path College.

Mallorie Blakney had nine points and eight rebounds for Thomas.

Jessica Hunt had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Bay Path and Chrissy Ordyna added 15 points and 12 boards.

Alexa Kaubris scored 13 points for Bowdoin and Maria Noucas provided seven assists.

Women’s hockey

Connecticut sweeps Maine

At Storrs, Conn., Dominique Thibault had a combined three goals and three assists to help the University of Connecticut defeat the University of Maine. UConn beat the Black Bears 7-2 on Saturday and 5-4 Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Thibault scored two goals for Connecticut while Amy Hollstein, Nicole Tritter and Brittany Murphy each had a goal and an assist. Jennifer Chiasson and Brianna Vliasz added goals. Jennie Bellonio and Brittany Wilson combined to stop 20 of 22 shots.

Jennie Gallo and Jordan Colliton scored for the Black Bears. Robyn Law and Vanessa Vani assisted on Gallo’s goal and Abby Barton and Pam Patterson assisted Colliton’s goal. Genevieve Turgeon made 34 saves on 41 shots.

In Sunday’s game, Chiasson scored twice for the 22-5-5 Huskies. Thibault and Jaclyn Hawkins each had a goal and three assists. Cristen Allen scored a goal and assisted on another. Wilson made 26 saves on 30 shots.

Colliton and Patterson each scored a goal and provided an assist for 4-25-3 Maine. Law and Taryn Peacock tallied a goal each. Barton, Gallo and Vani each provided two assists. Sarah Bishop turned away 22 of 27 shots.

Men’s basketball

UM-Fort Kent 73, Fisher 65

At South Portland on Saturday, Jimmy Lopez paced five UMaine-Fort Kent double-figure scorers with 21 points as the second-seeded Bengals advanced to the Sunrise Conference title game.

Yair Gal tossed in 15 points, Hamill Bassue scored 12, Othniel Hyliger contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Gediminas Sumyla posted 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Stephen Rice led No. 3 Fisher with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Louis Williams netted 21 points.

St. Joseph (Vt.) 80, UMM 59

At South Portland on Saturday, Rui Camo piled up 19 points and 17 rebounds to power second-seeded College of St. Joseph to a Sunrise Conference semifinal win over No. 3 UMaine-Machias.

Charles Calligan’s 16-point effort led the Clippers. Eric Righter provided 14 points and eight rebounds, and Anthony McCoy added nine points and nine boards.

Amherst 86, Colby 69

At Amherst, Mass., Fletcher Walters scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds Saturday to lead Amherst College past Colby College of Waterville in the NESCAC quarterfinals.

Andrew Olson scored 16 points for Amherst.

Adam Choice led the Mules with 22 points and nine rebounds. Michael Russell scored 11 points and Artie Cutrone added 10 points.
