A 63-year-old Presque Isle woman was killed Wednesday when she apparently lost control of her car on Interstate 95 and crashed into a snowbank just south of Howland.

Barbara Corso was heading north at 4:42 p.m. when she apparently lost control of her 2004 Honda Accord between mile markers 210 and 211 in Edinburgh, according to Maine State Police Trooper Lawrence Anderson.

“It looked like the road conditions played a factor. It was rainy, misty and the road was slippery,” Anderson said. “It looks like she started to slide and was unable to regain control.”

The vehicle hit the snowbank on the median of the highway and flipped up on the driver’s side, he said. The car then slid along the snowbank 46 feet before stopping, Anderson said.

Corso was dead when emergency personnel arrived, he said.

“It is still undetermined, but it appears she was not wearing a seat belt,” the trooper said.

A dog that was in the car with Corso survived the accident and was taken to a nearby kennel, according to Anderson.

The trooper said Corso had recently moved to Presque Isle from New Jersey.

Personnel from the Howland Fire Department and Penobscot Valley Ambulance in Lincoln assisted at the scene.
