Genealogy groups eager to fight cabin fever

Time to relieve this winter’s cabin fever, isn’t it? There’s nothing like getting together with other genies to rekindle your passion for researching your family tree.

From Bangor, it’s only about 45 minutes up Route 15 to get to Dover-Foxcroft – and we have two reasons to suggest that you go this week.

Join members of the Wassebec Genealogical Society for a talk by Maine Genealogical Society President Dale Mower at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the conference room at Mayo Regional Hospital.

Mower’s fascinating topic will be “Finding Ancestral Treasures on eBay.”

Learn what types of items may be found and how to win auctions on items of interests. And, hear all about his most exciting find on eBay!

For information, call the Bennetts at 876-3073 or the Batticks at 564-3576.

After hearing Mower’s talk, you will no doubt think, “This guy should give a workshop.” And so he has, many times – and so he will on Saturday, free!

Wassebec Genealogy Society will sponsor a free half-day genealogy workshop with Dale Mower 9 a.m.-noon March 15 at Thompson Free Library, on Main Street, Route 15, in Dover-Foxcroft.

There will be refreshments, and WGS members will be on hand to answer questions or offer help.

While preregistration is not necessary, it is helpful in making arrangements. RSVP to Nancy Battick at 564-3576 or nbattick@roadrunner.com.

Maine Genealogical Society has been fortunate to have very knowledgeable, enthusiastic genealogists serve as president, and Dale Mower certainly follows that model.

And, I might add, Thompson Free Library has a nice section on Maine and local history.

Having Trouble Finding Great-Grandpa Fred in the 1920 Census?

You know he has to be there, but you can’t find him in the index?

Plan to attend the next meeting of Wawenoc Chapter, Maine Genealogical Society, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, in the Abbott Room at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., Belfast.

Dereka Smith will bring her bag of tricks to help track down your invisible forebear.

To that end, here’s a bit of homework. Send your toughest census “dead end” in before the meeting to bparadis@belfastlibrary.org

The Washington County Genealogical Society organized in 1992 to collect, exchange and preserve related documents and information, and promote and encourage interest and scholarship in genealogy and family history in Washington County. Many members are also interested in neighboring Charlotte County, New Brunswick.

WCGS will hold the first meeting of the 2008 season at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Peavey Memorial Library, Eastport. Dues are $10 a year, and members receive a fine quarterly, Weirs & Woods.

For information, contact president Frances Raye at 853-6630, or secretary Valdine Atwood at 255-4432.

How about these for talks at the Sept. 20 Maine Genealogical Society meeting in South Portland? “Trace Your Roots with DNA” and “Beyond Y-DNA: Your Genetic Genealogy Options,” both with Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak.

Details will follow in Family Ties, but you also can check out www.maineroots.org

That Web site also will give you the particulars about MGS’ one-day workshop set for Saturday, April 19, in Augusta.

Diane Rapaport, of Lexington, Mass., will present “Finding Your Ancestors in Courthouse Records” 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.

Register before March 31 to receive a discount on the fee.

Majabigwaduce Chapter will meet for a program on “Herstory,” marking Women’s History Month, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 10, in the Brooksville Town Hall. Everyone interested in DAR is welcome to attend.
