Society honors its longtime leader

BANGOR – The local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a women’s educational society, has presented a check for $1,000 to the Bangor School Children’s Fund in memory of Rosemary Riley.

Riley was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for 47 years, serving as president and as chairwoman of numerous committees.

She was a foreign language teacher in local schools who participated in many educational groups. She was a Fulbright Scholar who studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.

For many years, Riley was the treasurer for the Bangor School Children’s Fund.

A grant also was presented to Kathy Pierce for use at Sign-N-Kids, a summer day camp for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children, their siblings and children of Deaf adults.

The Bangor School Children’s Fund was started more than 60 years ago by the Bangor Junior League and the Lions Club to pay for milk.

When the need for milk was covered, the fund expanded to meet health-related needs for Bangor School children such as eye glasses, hearing aids and other items identified by the school nurse.

The fund is supported mainly by clubs and Parent Teacher Organizations. Every year, the Downeast PTO donates $500. Also, the Lions Club provided a grant of $500.

Other supporters of the fund have been Quipus, Current Events Club and the Knights of Columbus.

Though Riley died recently, the School Children’s Fund acknowledges her many years of dedication to the fund.
