USM softball wins one, drops one

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies of Gorham plated eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 5-5 tie and cruise past Albright College 13-5 in their season opener at the Gene Cusic Softball Classic Thursday.

Roger Williams University shut out the Huskies 8-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.

In the first game, Sabrina Mills and Stacey Stuart each had four hits and an RBI for Southern Maine. Anita Dixon, Kristin Grondin and Meghan Ford drove in three runs apiece.

Allysa Wenrich doubled and singled with two RBIs for Albright.

In the second game, Samantha Teves tripled, doubled and singled to knock in five runs for Roger Williams.

William Paterson 13, USM 2

At Mesa, Ariz., John Elia hit a double and three singles and drove in two runs to lead William Paterson past the University of Southern Maine of Gorham.

Scott Fischer homered for William Patterson and Mike Guadango added two doubles and a single with two RBIs.

Collin Henry hit three singles and drove in both runs for the Huskies while Chris Burleson tripled, doubled and singled.

St. Joe’s wins one, loses one

At Washington, D.C., the Monks of Standish came back to knock off Catholic University 7-4 in the second game of a doubleheader after falling 7-6 in the opener.

In the nightcap, Dustin Spiller knocked a two-run home run while Ryan Murphy had two singles and two RBIs for St. Joe’s. Luke Enman added a double and single.

In the second game, Monks’ pitcher Chris Dion was the tough-luck loser in extra innings as Catholic scored a run with one out in the bottom of the eighth to prevail.

Wade Oliver doubled and singled for Saint Joseph’s while Luke Enman hit a solo homer.
