Transfer station thieves profit from appliance electrical cords

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Thieves are becoming so desperate they are cutting electrical cords off appliances discarded at remote transfer stations and stripping the wires from within.

The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of wire Sunday from transfer stations in Orneville and Lily Bay, both of which are county operated.

Investigator Jamie Kane said the cords were removed from four television sets discarded at the Orneville transfer station.

At the Lily Bay landfill, thieves stole a large radiator from a compactor and took scrap metals stored at the facility, Kane said Wednesday.

Kane said it is possible the thefts at each end of the county were related because they were reported on the same day.

Joe Sands, supervisor of the Dover-Foxcroft Solid Waste Facility said thieves managed a couple of times to cut and steal the copper wire from the refrigerators and freezers discarded at the landfill.
