STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Terren Hall’s two-run home run in the top of the 12th inning boosted the Maine softball team to an 8-6 victory over Stony Brook Sunday as the Black Bears took two of three in their conference openers and snapped an 0-28 streak.

The Black Bears won Saturday’s America East opener 10-5 in eight innings and dropped the second game of the doubleheader 7-2.

In Sunday’s game, Hall went 4-for-6 with five RBIs. The Bucksport native hit her first career home run in the third, a two-run shot that made it 5-1. Whitney Spangler had a three-run double in the inning.

Hall hit a two-run homer in the 12th, plating Ashley Waters (single) and putting Maine ahead for good. The Bears had a 6-1 lead in the top of the fifth but the Seawolves responded with a five-run in the bottom of the fifth.

Stony Brook’s Molly Kestranek hit a grand slam in the fifth.

In Saturday’s first game, Spangler, Waters and Kristen Calvetti each drove in two runs. Waters hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth as the Bears rallied from a 6-5 deficit with five runs. Reliever Cayleigh Montano tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Stony Brook’s Marissa Fleury knocked in three runs on two singles.

In Saturday’s second game, Fleury homered, doubled and singled twice for three RBIs. Alexis Souhlaris led Maine with a double, two singles and one RBI. Hall hit three singles and added an RBI.

At Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Sunday the Husson College pitching staff combined for two shutouts in a season-opening North Atlantic Conference doubleheader.

In the opener, Caitlin LeBorgne and Nicole Sargent combined on a four-hitter while striking out nine and walking two. Shannon Pietras had three hits, including a three-run home run that broke the game open in the top of the fourth.

Brittni Adams, Carolyn McAvoy, Shawna Bell and Megan Bradstreet each singled twice for the Eagles, while Jenny Rollins doubled.

In the second game, Tammie Arsenault and Sargent scattered five hits while walking one and striking out eight in the five-inning victory.

Rollins and Jenika Kelley each singled twice with two RBIs for Husson, while McAvoy and Bell added a double apiece and LeBorgne also drove home two runs.

MMA sweeps Wheelock

At Charlestown, Mass., Mallery Stanley had two hits and drove in four runs to lead Maine Maritime by Wheelock College 12-3 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Mariners defeated Wheelock in the first game 6-3.

In the first game, Brittany Hunt posted a pair of hits for Maine Maritime while Danielle Richard had a hit and an RBI.

In the second game, Hannah Seamans had a hit and drove in two runs while Hunt posted a hit and an RBI.

Babson sweeps Southern Maine

At Babson Park, Mass., on Sunday, Kaitlyn Clark combined for six hits and four RBIs to lead Babson to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Southern Maine.

Babson defeated the Huskies 6-1 in the first game and earned an 11-3 six-inning win in the second game.

In the first game, Clark posted three hits and an RBI for Babson.

Sabrina Mills led Southern Maine with a pair of hits.

In the second game, Clark paced Babson with three hits and three RBIs.

Sarah Deroche, Stacey Stuart and Heather Gilman each had two hits for the Huskies. Sabrina Sevigny and Gilman each drove in a run.
