BANGOR – City officials at a Wednesday news conference officially received more than $259,000 in new federal funds to help fight homelessness in the city.

The money, part of $5.5 million in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants headed for the state, will fund 10 new rental subsidies for young adults with disabilities who are aging out of the foster care system.

In total, Bangor will receive $478,000. The balance will pay for the renewal for several programs, including a three-year position for the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter’s transitional housing coordinator at $55,799.

The award, part of a $1 billion federal aid package for the homeless, was announced Dec. 23. The grants will fund more than 2,600 homeless prevention programs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. More than 200,000 people are expected to be helped by the awards.
