BANGOR – The Husson College Eagles had scored four runs in their previous three games entering Sunday’s nonconference doubleheader against Thomas College of Waterville.

But the Eagles scored 24 runs and pounded out 28 hits en route to an 11-4, 13-6 sweep that snapped their six-game losing streak.

“We got hits when we needed to and we scored runs in bunches,” said Husson junior designated hitter Nick Arthers, whose three-run double keyed a four-run sixth inning that broke open the nightcap.

“We wanted to make a statement that we aren’t the [poor] team everybody thinks we are. We’ve got the pitching and hitting to win games,” added Arthers. “These were two big wins for us.”

The Eagles (9-16) also received strong seven-inning stints from righthanders Andrew Patterson and Chris Pease, who overcame shaky starts to shut the Terriers down.

In the opener, Brewer’s Patterson allowed six hits and three runs while striking out two and walking two. He gave up all three runs in the first.

“After the first inning, I refocused and took command,” said Patterson, who induced 15 ground-ball outs. “The umpire was giving us a foot off the outside corner so I kept the ball low and kept it on the outside part of the plate. I let the defense do the work and they did a great job.”

Fort Kent’s Tom Desjardins staked the Terriers (7-8) to a 3-0 lead with a two-out, three-run triple to left-center. It was the first of his two triples and five hits in the doubleheader as he snapped a season-long slump.

Husson tied it in the second on Dennis Graham’s RBI double, Brian McGinley’s run-scoring single and a bases-loaded walk to Tom Crews.

Chris Maguire put Husson ahead to stay in the third as he celebrated his 19th birthday with a long, two-run double to left after Arthers doubled off the fence and Graham reached on an error.

“I was looking for a fastball and [losing pitcher Tony MacMillan] threw me a fat one on the inside part of the plate,” said Maguire.

Corey Cushing singled home another run and Crews drew another bases-loaded walk to make it 7-3.

Cushing and McGinley, the Nos. 8-9 hitters in the order, had three hits each for Husson with Arthers and Graham collecting two each. Chris Morris pitched the final two innings.

Mike Chamard had three hits for Thomas with Desjardins and Josh Nickerson adding two each.

In the nightcap, the Eagles spotted the Terriers a 4-1 lead before erasing the deficit with a run in the third and three in the fifth.

In the fifth, Jeff Miller grounded a double down the left-field line and Graham drove him home with a long double to left-center to make it 4-3.

Maguire blooped a single to right and then two runs scored when Logan York grounded an infield single to second and the low throw to first kicked off his foot and rolled down the right-field line.

“I was just trying to pull the ball to get the run home [from third],” said York.

“I tried to keep the ball low and away but they hit it,” said losing pitcher Cory Estes of Old Town.

Two walks sandwiched a Crews single in the sixth that set the stage for Arthers’ line-drive, opposite-field double down the right-field line off reliever Ryan Cotnoir.

“I’ve been trying to stay back and hit the ball up the middle or the opposite way and he gave me a good pitch to hit the other way, an outside fastball,” said Arthers.

Cushing hit a two-run homer to left in the eighth.

Pease allowed nine hits and four runs with four strikeouts and three walks. Sam Adolphsen finished up.

“They were sitting on my fastball so I mixed in my changeup and curve,” said Hampden’s Pease.

Ethan Guerette, Crews and York had three hits apiece for Husson. York had three RBIs and Guerette scored four times. Graham and Maguire had two hits each.

Desjardins had three hits for Thomas with Mike Busa, Andrew Martin and Chamard collecting two apiece.
