BANGOR – The stage was set for Thursday’s non-conference softball doubleheader between Husson College and the University of Maine-Presque Isle.
Husson’s Eagles were swept by conference foe Thomas College in a Wednesday doubleheader, and UMPI’s Owls were coming off a two-week stretch of no game action.
The Eagles took their frustration out on the rusty Owls by allowing just two hits in two shutouts – 6-0 and 14-0 – at sun-splashed O’Keefe Complex.
“This was important because we needed a big boost after yesterday,” said Husson second baseman Cassie Berry. “I wasn’t doing too well yesterday, but today I think I was waiting on pitches more and looking them over better. I kept my head in there and timed pitches better.”
Berry did very well Thursday, helping to lead the charge by going 3-for-6 with two stolen bases, three singles, three runs, and four RBIs.
In all, the 17-9 Eagles pounded out 19 hits and batted .388 against UMPI pitching while the Owls batted just .054.
“We played really well for two weeks after our initial start, but we’ve had the last two weeks off,” said UMPI coach Mike Carlos, whose Owls drop to 2-11. “We haven’t seen a lot of live pitching other than our practices and scrimmages. This was live pitching, outside, on grass… and we haven’t been able to go outside.
“It’s almost like starting the season over again.”
In the first game, Husson freshman Nicky Sargent hadn’t pitched in awhile, but looked anything but rusty. She pitched a one-hitter while allowing three walks and notching six strikeouts.
“My changeups and drops were working really well and my fastball was really good with my location,” Sargent said. “Shawna [catcher Shawna Bell] did a great job setting me up and getting me to put it where it needs to go.”
Sargent actually finished stronger than she started, striking out the side in the seventh. Two of her walks came in the first and Nicole Russell’s single was in the second.
“I don’t know what it was. Maybe my arm was getting warm, but I was definitely getting more speed later in the game,” Sargent said.
Husson gave her the only run she’d need in the fourth, but exploded for five more in the fifth with six hits and two UMPI errors.
“We were looking to win that first game with our best pitcher out there. It was pretty even other than that one big inning they had,” Carlos said. “We had some mental lapses and that comes from not being in game situations for awhile.”
Leadoff hitter Dottie Cameron led the way for Husson with three singles in four at-bats. Bell and No. 9 hitter Shannon Pietras had two singles in three at-bats.
In the second game, Husson scored once in the second and broke it wide open in the third with nine runs.
The Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in the third, getting five hits and three walks. Pietras and Berry again delivered key hits as each hit two-run singles in the inning. Pietras also doubled earlier.
“We were pretty well warmed up after that first game,” Berry said. “And once we start getting a couple hits together, it seems to get us started, momentum-wise. We really don’t have any weak spots in our lineup.”
Freshman duo Tammie Arsenault and Caitlin LeBorgne combined on a one-hitter with Arsenault earning the win after allowing a hit and a walk in three innings of work. She also had three strikeouts. LeBorgne relieved her for two perfect innings with one strikeout.
