Maxim, Cake prevail in 5K race

Downpours kept runners indoors for the third annual Ma’naKwane 5K race held recently on Indian Island. The race was created in memory of Lindsey Almenas, who was killed in a 2005 car accident.

Runners from across Maine participated in the challenging race.

State Sen. Elizabeth Schneider of Orono recognized the Almenas family for its hard work and announced the race.

This year a course record was set by Judson Cake with a time of 15:48. Erik McCarthy held the 2007 record with a time of 17:19.

Hilary Maxim wowed viewers as the first female winner for 2007 and 2008 with a time of 20:36.

Cake and Maxim received one-of-a-kind, hand-carved traditional walking sticks made by a member of the Penobscot tribal community.

“This is the nicest thing I have ever won,” Cake said.

Proceeds for the race benefit the Lindsey Almenas Scholarship Fund. Organizers extended heartfelt thanks to sponsors and volunteers who made the race possible.
