ORONO – The University of Maine Black Bears swept Vermont 30-22, 30-15, 30-21 behind the 15-kill, 18-dig effort of Leah Voss in volleyball action Friday night.
Maine has won three of its last four matches.
Adrienne Poplawski added 12 kills and Cheryl Elliott, this week’s America East Setter of the Week, recorded 41 assists for 5-6 Maine. Carmen Gabriel aided the cause with seven kills and three aces while Claire Poliquin tallied eight kills.
Chelsea Molloy paced the 1-12 Catamounts with five kills and eight digs. Sarah Palmer distributed 10 assists and Amelia Koopman chipped in with four kills and five digs.
Women’s soccer
Maine 3, Iona 0
At New Rochelle, N.Y., the Black Bears blanked Iona en route to their third straight victory. Maine controlled the ball throughout, enjoying a 28-3 advantage on shots.
Jen Buckley, Emily Stevens, and Bar Harbor native Maija Kaldro scored goals for 4-1-1 Maine. Allison Kelly, Rachel Kennedy, and Katie Hodge contributed assists. Naomi Welsh made one save and gained her fourth shutout of the season. She has a 0.47 goals-against average.
For 1-9 Iona, Jenn Radke and Alicia Wisnewski combined for nine saves.
Field hockey
Maine 2, Drexel 1 (2OT)
At Philadelphia, Morgan Brady scored an unassisted goal with 8:34 left in the second overtime, lifting the Black Bears to victory.
Karyn Magno had tied the game for 4-4 Maine with a goal at 17:43 of the second half. Jaye Lance made five saves for the Bears, who outshot Drexel 23-8.
Caliann Bogovic scored for the 3-5 Dragons, who received 14 saves from Margaret Barrow.
