NESCom Alumni Award

BANGOR – Life on the high seas can be exciting. It also can be rewarding, and for Tim Cabral, a 1990 graduate of the New England School of Broadcasting – the forerunner of the New England School of Communications – one of the rewards of his career has been his selection for NESCom’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

The award will be presented at the school’s commencement exercises on Saturday, May 10, at Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium.

Cabral, a native of Middleboro, Mass., is the special projects manager for the Carnival Cruise Lines Entertainment Department. Just two weeks after his graduation, he started as the club disc jockey working the 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift on Carnival’s ship, Holiday, sailing out of Miami.

After two years as a disc jockey, Cabral joined the company’s technical team as an entertainment technician and moved rapidly up the ladder with the cruise line after a five-month interruption when he left the sea to become the midday host at WHOU-radio in Houlton.

He has been a senior entertainment technician, coordinator and supervisor. In 2000 he was promoted to entertainment technical manager. He assumed his current position in the spring of 2003. Cabral lives in Florida with his wife, Shelley, and children Erin and Ethan.

Fiber art at library

“It’s like a meditation,” Anita McCormick says of her work. This may seem puzzling or perplexing, but seeing her work makes the statement clear. McCormick is a fiber artist. A number of her works are on display during May in the showcase of the Bangor Public Library’s round Reading Room.

McCormick said that intuition guides her needle. Some works appear whimsical, others spiritual, but whatever thoughts and ideas McCormick expresses with her needle, beads, embroidery and fabric, are inspired. The exhibit is open during library hours and is free.

The library’s Stairwell Gallery is showcasing a few samples from Scott Servisky’s collection of bookmarks. His collection started 25 years ago and now contains more than 4,000. Some of his favorites are on exhibit in the display case in the library’s Stairwell Gallery.

Baldacci received an honorary doctorate from the college in 1997 while serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

According to MMA President Leonard Tyler, the college will recognize Baldacci for his more than 25 years of service to the people of Maine.

“An understanding of the value of community service and a commitment to give back are key components of personal development that we work to cultivate in all Maine Maritime Academy students. Baldacci is a tremendous example of the professional success and personal satisfaction one can achieve through service. Quite simply, he’s an excellent role model.”

Commencement activities will begin at 9 a.m. with the annual awards program in Delano Auditorium, Leavitt Hall.

The college’s Class of 2008 includes seven associate in science, 168 bachelor of science, and 15 master of science degree candidates.

Hubble Vision sights

Everyone’s eyes gain super powers at UMaine’s Jordan Planetarium when they experience “Hubble Vision: Exploring the Universe,” playing at 7 p.m. Saturdays during May. This space odyssey uses the latest images from the Hubble Space Telescope to journey through the universe and gain new understanding of its many complicated parts.

With glimpses of faraway star birth nurseries, a supernova and a comet’s collision with Jupiter, this spellbinding quest goes way beyond the constellations of a Maine backyard evening. “Hubble Vision: Exploring the Universe” uses the Jordan Planetarium’s new Omnidome system to animate the beautiful color imagery captured by the Space Telescope.

All showings are one hour long. Admission is $3 and seating is limited, so reservations are highly recommended. For information and reservations, call 581-1341 or visit www.galaxymaine.com.
