Burgess Jr. cruises to Unity wins

UNITY – Rick Burgess Jr. won the Wildcat feature races on both Friday and Saturday, locking up the division championship in the process in action at Unity Raceway.

Saturday, Burgess recovered from a head-on collision early in the race to outlast James McGarey and Bill Bowley. In Friday’s 100-lap event, Bowley was second again and Keith Fuller was third.

At Winterport Dragway, Linda Fuller of Old Town out-dueled Kent Worcester of Waite en route to a first-place finish in the Super Pro Final.

Phippen rallies for 95 win

At Speedway 95 in Hermon, John Phippen of Bar Harbor started off fifth in a 22-car field at Speedway 95’s Partnership for a Tobacco Free Maine 50-lap pro stock feature Sunday night, but finished first.

Phippen wrested the lead away from pole sitter Scott Chubbock in the final even of the venue’s five-race series in a lap 7 restart and held off the rest of the field. Bangor’s Gary Smith was right on Phippen’s bumper for much of the rest of the race, but had to settle for second. Chubbock was third, Randy Turner of Freedom fourth, and Orrington’s Kris Huff fifth.

Aaron St. Peter of Brewer, who finished ninth in the race, won the 2001 Pro Stock points championship.
