Kiwanis Club seeks talent show contestants

Brewer Kiwanis Club secretary Herb Hopkins stopped by last week to report the club will hold its second annual So You Think You Have Talent show at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Brewer High School.

The contest is open to everyone. Prizes are $500 for the three categories: up to age 10, 11-18, and 19 and older, and there is a grand prize of $1,000.

The entry fee is $5. Contestants must provide their own music, instruments or whatever is needed to audition.

Preregistration is required and applications will not be available at the door. Auditions are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Brewer High School.

Applications are available at the following locations: all Gold Star Cleaners; in Brewer at Awards Signage and Trophies, the high school, the library and the auditorium; in Bangor at Camden National Bank, Bangor Cleaners, Henry’s Formal Wear and Realty of Maine; or by calling club president Jessica Tilton at 942-0913 or 356-9163.

Mailed applications, including the $5 entry fee, must be received no later than Tuesday, May 27, and may be obtained by writing Brewer Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 538, Brewer 04412.

After the audition a Kiwanis member will contact applicants and the chosen contestants will receive further instructions. The dress rehearsal is 7 p.m. Friday, June. 6, at Brewer High School.

Tickets to attend the show are $10 for adults, $5 for students, $15 for VIP tickets for floor seating up front.

Tickets will be available at the door, and all proceeds benefit local children’s charities and programs of Brewer Kiwanis.

Jennifer Brooks of Penquis reports preregistration is required for the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program’s two free women’s health screening days.

The first screening is Wednesday, May 14, in Greenville with Northwoods Healthcare and Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital; the second is with Katahdin Valley Health Center and Millinocket Regional Hospital, Thursday, May 15, in Millinocket and Patten.

The free program is for women ages 40-64 who have little or limited health insurance and meet certain income guidelines.

Joan Gibson of Levant invites you to a public forum, “No Farms, No Food,” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Mystic Tie Grange in Kenduskeag.

Invited participants, Gibson wrote, include USDA state directors, local congressional representatives, farmers, people in the alternative energy business, researches and others.

Diane Cutler called to remind interested individuals that Penobscot Valley Senior College is offering “Great Conversations,” featuring members of the University of Maine College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, 2-4 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Dirigo Pines in Orono.

The program begins with a welcoming reception at 1:30 p.m. and, if you want to participate, you may call the Senior College message phone at 262-7927 and leave your name and telephone number.

Jon Falk of Peace through Interamerican Community Action in Bangor invites you to the opening of the photography and audio exhibit of Maine Migrant Farmworkers, 4-6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, in the Round Reading Room of Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St.

The exhibit, Making the Unseen Visible: Farmworkers Feed Us All, features the work of photojournalist Earl Dotter and audio-documentary reporter Tennessee Watson.

PICA also will honor Maine Migrant Health Program farmworker youth intern and University of Maine nursing student, Olivia Perez Zamora, one of seven national recipients of the 2008 Migrant Health Scholarship Award from the National Center for Farmworker Health, along with representatives of PICA, MMH and former Maine farmworkers.

People “struggling to understand” parents and children are invited to “Learn and Laugh About Generational Differences and How to Prepare for Your Future,” 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Westgate Manor, 750 Union St. in Bangor.

Norma Milton, president of Caribou Pet Rescue, reports that now through Thursday, May 15, the canine adoption price has been lowered to $75 from $100 because of the number of large dogs awaiting adoption.

“We have some lovely dogs; active, healthy and happy personalities,” she wrote.
