CLICKBACK WITH CANDIDATES

With the U.S. economy on the skids, gas prices on the rise and no visible end to America’s presence in Iraq, Congress will play a critical role in shaping the country’s future. Because Maine is a small state, its two representatives work closely together and district lines are often blurred.

Next month, voters in the 1st District will chose the Democratic and Republican candidates who will vie to replace Tom Allen. Six Democrats – Michael Brennan, Adam Cote, Mark Lawrence, Steve Meister, Chellie Pingree and Ethan Strimling – are seeking their party’s nomination. On the Republican side, Dean Scontras and Charlie Summers are vying for their party’s nod.

What are the issues that most concern you? What should Congress do about them? You can ask the candidates directly through ClickBack, the BDN’s interactive feature.

What should Congress do to stimulate the economy? Do these candidates support government mandated controls on industry to slow climate change? Do they think universal health care is the solution to rising medical and insurance costs? Would they vote for a firm deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq?

This is your opportunity to share your own concerns and questions with the candidates before making a decision about whom to vote for.
