Golf classic for heart fund

HERMON – Michelle Wittine, assistant manager of the Hannaford store near the Bangor Mall, invites the public to participate in the 11th Hannaford Golf Classic on Wednesday, June 11, at Hermon Meadows Golf Club, which will host the 18-hole tournament and auction.

The tournament will benefit the American Heart Association and the United Way of Eastern Maine.

Golfers are invited to participate from a four-person team sponsored by a company to a four-person team sponsored by team members.

Eagle sponsorships are $1,000 and include a four-player tournament fee, tee sign and company logo on banners throughout the golf course.

Birdie sponsorship is $750 for a two-player team, tee sign and company logo on banners throughout the golf course. Par sponsorships are for a one-person tournament fee, tee sign and logo on banners throughout the golf course. Tee sponsorships are $150, and a foursome fee is $400.

British soccer camp

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its British Soccer Camp run by Challenger Sports Monday through Friday, July 14-18.

Children ages 4 and 5 will participate in the camp 1-2:30 p.m. The cost is $75. Children age 6 to 10 take part 9 a.m.-noon. The cost is $110. Children age 11 to 16 are scheduled for 1-4 p.m., and the cost is $110.

Children ages 10 to 16 have the option of an all-day camp, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., for $155. Register at www.challengersports.com by May 23 and receive a free British soccer jersey. Orono Parks and Rec

The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for programs:

. Red Riot Track Club, open to all children ages 6 to 14. Club members practice two times per week and have meets on Thursdays. The cost is $45 for Orono residents, $55 others.

. Sticks for Kids golf clinic, June 24-27, for all children in grades three through eight. Grades six to eight, 9:30 a.m.-noon; grades three-five, 12:30-3 p.m. The fee is $30 for Orono residents, $40 others.

. Fourteenth annual Orono Basketball School, for children in grades three through nine. Grades three through six participate 9 a.m.-noon, and grades six through nine participate 1-4 p.m. Those in grade six have a choice of either session or both. The boys’ week is June 23-27 and the girls’ week is July 7-11. The fee is $75 per session, or $130 all day for sixth-graders.

Grant to Bangor Y

BANGOR – The Bangor Y recently received a $4,500 grant from the Elizabeth W. Means Trust, of which Bank of America is the trustee.

Funds from the grant will be used to support aquatic programming for special needs groups.

Pool time provides a safe, healthful environment for participants to exercise, strengthen physically and build camaraderie in a low-stress atmosphere. In addition to the ongoing programming which serves 140 individuals each week, the Bangor Y hosts the Special Olympics Swim Meet in March, which draws nearly 250 people.

“Aquatic activities provide a fun way for individuals with special needs to experience physical activity in the water under the supervision of trained staff, while also building relationships and self-esteem,” said Bangor Y CEO Rob Reeves. “We are grateful to the Elizabeth W. Means Trust for their continued support of this worthwhile program.”

Motorcycle safety, awareness

May is “Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month” by proclamation of Gov. John Baldacci. Dozens of representatives of the nonprofit United Bikers of Maine gathered on May 1 at the Blaine House for the Governor’s Tea, hosted by the governor himself.

It was a chance for the officers of UBM to talk one on one with the governor, chief of the state police and other safety officials to share their thoughts on improving safety and awareness for the motorcyclist and the public in general.
