10 years ago – May 15, 1998

BREWER – Brewer senior pitcher Kristen Frey helped her own cause with three hits, including an RBI triple. But really, she had help from every direction as the Witches beat the Hampden Academy Broncos 12-0 in high school softball action.

From the bottom of the Witches’ lineup – where Mandy Brigalli went 3-for-3 with two runs scored – to the top – where Tami Corey had a hit, two RBIs and a run scored – the Witches got production.

If they didn’t get but one hit in an inning – like the seventh where they scored twice – they either bunted runners home or scored on errors.

25 years ago – May 15, 1983

ORONO – Baseball is often called a chess game, but University of Maine baseball coach John Winkin didn’t have the good fortune of Bobby Fischer during the 18-inning marathon against Providence College. His final move worked to perfection and was a major factor in Maine’s dramatic 5-4 win.

50 years ago – May 15, 1958

BANGOR – Five candidates are in the race for the honor of Miss Armed Forces Day, to be crowned to reign over the Military Ball at the Air National Guard hangar at Dow AFB.

Candidates are Miss Mary Ann Laurynite, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Violette, a senior at Bangor High School, sponsored by the 132nd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron of the Maine Air National Guard; Miss Jane Libby, a student at the University of Maine, sponsored by the 416th Military Police Company; Miss Toni Gillespie, a student at Eastern Maine General Hospital and sponsored by the 101st USAF Infirmary, Maine National Guard; Miss Janet LeClair of Orono, sponsored by the Headquarters, Maine Air National Guard, Augusta; and Miss Cynthia Gould, a Bangor High School student and daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Douglas Gould, sponsored by the 101st Air Defense Wing Headquarters.

100 years ago – May 15, 1908

BANGOR – In response to hundreds of requests, “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” will be shown at the Nickel Theatre.

The famous ride and the events leading up to it – including the hanging of the lanterns in the Old North Church – are reproduced with wonderful fidelity.

This picture will be shown as a special added feature, not as part of the regular bill. Thus there will be three reels of pictures, five in all, and two illustrated songs. The performance will last over an hour and all will be offered for 5 cents. Can you beat that anywhere?
