Bearcats pound UMaine; USM baseball stays alive

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton scored in every inning except the third and pounded out 20 hits Thursday en route to a 12-4 America East baseball victory over the University of Maine.

Kyle Klee jumped on Black Bears’ starter Alejandro Balsinde in the first with a three-run homer while Peter Bregartner had an RBI single in a two-run second inning.

Balsinde surrendered six runs, all earned, on 11 hits in four innings of work, walking none and striking out three.

The Bearcats (26-24, 14-7 AE) added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and tacked on another in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Zach Groh earned the win.

Curt Smith doubled twice and singled to pace the Bears (16-22-1, 7-14 AE). Myckie Lugbauer had a single and a sacrifice fly while Jarrett Lukas of Old Town doubled and singled.

Kevin McAvoy of Brewer hit a sacrifice fly and Kevin Jackson had an RBI fielder’s choice.

At Harwich, Mass., Nate Nelson homered twice to knock in five runs while Ryan Laprade plated seven on a homer, double and single as Worcester State knocked Saint Joseph’s of Standish from the NCAA New England Division III Regional.

No. 7 Worcester State reached Monks starter Pat Moran for eight runs and seven hits in the top of the first and never looked back.

Dustin Spiller had two doubles and an RBI for the No. 6 Monks while Andrew Wood singled twice and scored a run.

At Harwich, Mass., the University of Southern Maine of Gorham scored eight runs in the second inning Thursday while beating Castleton State (Vt.) to stay alive in the NCAA New England Division III Regional baseball tourney.

The No. 4 Huskies play a 1 p.m. elimination game today.

Anthony D’Alfonso rapped a triple and two singles (3 RBIs) to pace USM, which scored seven runs in the eighth. Eddie Skeffington hit a double and two singles while Chris Burleson, Collin Henry and Andrew Stacy added two hits each.

Brad Polcare doubled and singled for the No. 8 Spartans, who were eliminated.
