AUGUSTA – Maine State Police say additional troopers and several special enforcement efforts are planned for the Memorial Day weekend. In addition to troopers patrolling, the state police plane also will be airborne looking for aggressive drivers and trouble spots.
Chief of the state police Col. Patrick J. Fleming said extra patrols will be looking for drunken and aggressive drivers and speeders, and enforcing Maine’s seat belt and child safety seat laws.
Fleming said, “Memorial Day weekend sets the tone for highway safety enforcement for the rest of the summer, and the state police goal is to make it a safe one. Drivers need to avoid drinking and driving, drive the speed limit, buckle up and expect some delays because of heavy holiday traffic.”
State police is one of 72 Maine police departments taking part in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign which continues through June 1. The campaign is part of a national effort to increase seat belt use.
Fleming said highway fatalities stand at 57 going into the weekend, which compares with 54 deaths at the same time last year.
