Bangor man indicted in attempted murder

BANGOR – The Penobscot County grand jury Monday indicted a Bangor man previously charged with elevated aggravated assault for attempted murder.

David Archer, 33, allegedly stabbed his former girlfriend twice in the stomach with a knife on April 26 outside a Hudson Street house in Bangor. The victim, according to Greg Campbell, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County, has been released from Eastern Maine Medical Center and is recovering.

Campbell said he sought the attempted murder indictment after police learned Archer had allegedly told at least one other person that he planned to kill the victim and her new boyfriend.

Archer remains at the Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail set at $100,000 surety or $20,000 cash.

He is expected to be arraigned later this week in Penobscot County Superior Court in Bangor on charges of assault, elevated aggravated assault and attempted murder.

If convicted, Archer faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.

In an unrelated case, an Orono man was indicted for attempted gross sexual assault and soliciting a child by a computer.

William Dana Reed, 44, was charged in April after an Orono Middle School student told a school resource officer about a man who was making contact with him over the Internet on his MySpace account and asking for sex.

The officer took over the student’s identity using AOL Instant Messenger, according to a report published earlier in the Bangor Daily News. Reed was arrested when the officer arranged for Reed to meet whom he believed to be a 13-year-old boy underneath the Main Street bridge in Orono.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and fine of up to $20,000.

Reed, who is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, June 27, in Penobscot County Superior Court, is free on $1,000 unsecured bail.
