Orland Historical Society to hold benefit yard sale

Members of the Orland Historical Society are working to “raise money to preserve the 200-year-old building that houses our museum in Orland Village,” said JoAnn Carlson of the OHS.

“We are raising money to raise the roof (and maybe the whole museum) for future generations to enjoy collective history.”

Part of that effort will be a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, at 235 State Route 46 in Bucksport, a site that overlooks the Orland River valley, she said.

Carlson is working on this event with Ginny Davis, and the women hope others will make donations to the yard sale to ensure its success.

If you can contribute something for this fundraiser, you are asked to call Carlson at 469-1131.

With what has already been collected for the sale, Carlson promises the event “will offer treasures for every holiday, including items donated by a local gift shop’s inventory clearance.”

And, she added, “someone has even given us crocheted, miniature teacups!”

So you see this sale already offers a wide range of items to choose from and the planners hope, with your contributions, even more interesting objects will be available for those attending this event.

Garden enthusiasts have not one, but two opportunities to take part in the Peony Society of Maine’s seventh annual Peony Garden Tour.

According to information provided by the organization, the tour will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, and Saturday, June 21, at the private garden of Ken Liberty, 23 Ohio St., Bangor.

Your $2 admission will help purchase herbaceous and tree peonies for public gardens in Maine, help educate the public, and assist those who want to learn about how to grow and cultivate peonies.

The society also will sell black cotton T-shirts with a peony and the society’s name for $9.95, cash only.

Prospective attendees are encouraged to visit on one or both dates, since some varieties of the plant will be in full bloom the first week and others in bloom the second week.

For more information about the event or the society, visit bairnet.org/~peony or call Liberty at 945-9726.

Carmen Smith wants readers to know that the Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society will be conducting its third annual attic sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Dover-Foxcroft fire station.

“We would also like to remind the public, when they are spring cleaning and find treasures that they no longer want,” Smith wrote, to “please remember the Society” and consider contributing those items to the sale.

“Free pickup is available in the Dover-Foxcroft area,” she added.

If you have items to donate, call 564-7251 or 876-3663.

Kathy Childs e-mailed that the Bangor Area Sewing Guild will offer a class to teach “drafting pants patterns for women.”

All participants “will draft a pants pattern for themselves using their own measurements,” Childs said about an opportunity she considers “a great way to finally get a pants pattern that fits.”

The class is 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Hampden Municipal Building.

The cost is $10 for guild members and $15 for nonmembers, plus an additional $5 supply fee.

Participants are asked to bring “stretchy pants or a pair of pantyhose” for measuring, Children wrote.
