Maine lawmaker quits town recreation post

GORHAM – A Maine House member whose expenses as a town recreation director have come into question says he’s cooperating in a police investigation.

Democratic Rep. Christopher Barstow of Gorham has stepped down from his job as recreation director in Buxton, a post he’s held for four years.

Barstow quit May 21 after an audit indicated he was using a town credit card, a cell phone and a postage machine for personal use. Accountant Ron Smith says the total amount of money involved was less than $1,000.

Barstow told the Portland Press Herald he’s aware of the investigation and is cooperating with police.
