MONSON – Elderly people on fixed incomes in the region can get relief during hot spells thanks to the efforts of a local man who refurbishes donated air conditioners.
For the second consecutive year, Doug Villone is soliciting air conditioners in operable condition to give to shut-ins and the elderly free for the asking. Villone cleans the machines, installs new filters, and oils the motors before delivering and installing them where needed.
“I don’t think I’ve enjoyed anything as much – just seeing the smiles on their faces is great,” Villone said this week. He said the elderly not only enjoy the cool comfort, but they also have enjoyed his visits.
It was during his travels as an animal control officer that Villone first discovered how uncomfortable some residents were in the hot temperatures. He said he found he could help these shut-ins feed their pets but could do little to make them more comfortable in the heat.
During a visit to his doctor’s office in Bangor two years ago, Villone spotted a small air conditioner discarded at the curb for disposal. Since he needed an air conditioner for his kennel, he received permission from the homeowner to take the unit. As he refurbished it, his idea about collecting other discarded air conditioners and donating them to senior citizens was hatched.
Villone said he collected 40 air conditioners last year and gave away 20 of the units to the elderly in the greater Piscataquis County region. He now has 24 units refurbished and ready to go this summer and anticipates more will be donated in the next few weeks.
Living on a fixed income, Villone said he had solicited donations from local oil companies to help pay for the filters and the gasoline he uses to deliver the units but none was interested in helping. Regardless of the out-of-pocket expenses, Villone said he would continue to help those in need.
“You do it one year and you want to do it again,” Villone said.
Senior citizens who would like an air conditioner should contact Villone at 997-3913.
Those wishing to donate a workable air conditioner can either call Villone or drop the item off at his home at 295 North Guilford Road in Monson.
