Katahdin rallies in 7th to top DI-Stonington

STACYVILLE – Tom Anderson hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to score pinch-runner Richard Qualey tagged from third base and beat the throw home to cap a four-run rally to lead No. 2 Katahdin to an 11-10 victory over No. 11 Deer Isle-Stonington in an Eastern Maine Class D baseball semifinal.

Ethan Qualey singled to drive in the tying run in the seventh for Katahdin after Evan McCarthy’s RBI double brought the Cougars within a run.

Katahdin’s Josh Guiggey hit a three-run triple in the third inning. Ethan Qualey hit a double and two singles, Anderson doubled and singled and Andy Kay singled twice.

Collin Ciomei tripled and singled with four RBIs to lead the Mariners. Evan Rollins hit a single and drove in three runs and Eben Powers added three singles and an RBI.

At Ashland, Dakota Sleeper fashioned a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and provided a triple, a double and two singles good for four RBIs as the fourth-seeded Warriors avenged two regular-season losses to the No. 1 Hornets.

Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the second and then pulled away. Cody Robinson hit a two-run triple and a single, Josh Branscombe rapped a double and two singles (1 RBI) and Tyler Boulier collected three singles for the Warriors.

Carl Nemer singled in a run to pace Ashland, but suffered a broken leg while stealing a base in the second inning. He underwent surgery Saturday night, according to Hornets coach Danny Cote.

At Morton Field in Augusta, Caleb Kirk stroked a two-run single to highlight a five-run seventh inning that carried the sixth-seeded Broncos to their second upset of the playoffs.

Junior Shawn Smith scattered seven hits and struck out eight as Hampden Academy earned a spot in Tuesday’s regional championship game against Brewer.

Patrick Stephens and Ryan Lindemann each hit a run-scoring single in the seventh to give HA a 7-1 advantage. Nolan Turner doubled and scored two runs, while Stephens also drew a bases-loaded walk.

Jason Burns and Jake Lachance posted two singles each for No. 2 Cony, while Luke Dunklee hit a two-run single.

At Gardiner, No. 2 Gardiner broke open a scoreless game with seven runs in the fifth inning to defeat No. 3 Ellsworth.

Senior right hander Mike Lavallee (4-0) allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out six to earn the shutout.

Forrest Chadwick tripled and singled with two RBIs for Gardiner. Roland Kennerson hit a two-run double in the fifth inning and Alex Wheelock had an RBI double in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth.

Andrew Hodge and Ryan Maddocks singled for Ellsworth.

George Stevens 12, Orono 2

At Blue Hill, Nick Saunders hit a single and drove in three runs to lead top-seeded George Stevens Academy to victory over No. 4 Orono.

Josh Astbury picked up the win, allowing two runs, two hits, two walks and striking out four for the Eagles. He also hit two singles with two RBIs.

Lucas Marks doubled and singled with an RBI for George Stevens. Steve Ensworth had two singles and an RBI and Peter Dickinson singled and brought home two runs.

Ben Perry had a single and an RBI to lead Orono. Kirk Francis also singled.

Searsport 4, Calais 2

At Searsport, Tom Cameron hit a solo home run in the first inning and added two singles as No. 2 Searsport defeated No. 3 Calais.

Casey Ashey allowed two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out 10 for Searsport.

Josh Pedrick doubled and singled and Rocky Faunce had two singles and an RBI.

Jordan Leeman hit a double and a single to pace Calais and Dylan Ramsdell had an RBI single.
