BELFAST – The State Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday that a woman whose body was found on the beach at Islesboro on Monday died from drowning, but that the manner of her death is not yet known.
“The cause of death was drowning, but the manner of her death is pending,” Brandy Pyska of the State Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday.
The body of Ana M. Tavarez, 53, of the Bronx, N.Y., a native of the Dominican Republic, was found on the rocks off Hermitz Point Road on Monday afternoon.
Chief Deputy Bob Keating of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department said Tavarez worked for the family of a New York lawyer who spent summers on Islesboro.
A caretaker for Tavarez’s employer found the body and called the Waldo County dispatch number, Keating said. Tavarez was fully clad and wearing footwear when she was found.
Deputy Sheriff Ben Seekins, who serves on the island, went to the beach to investigate.
The investigation of her death is continuing, Keating said. Detective Jason Bosco of the Sheriff’s Department is the lead investigator. Detectives Scott Bryant and Dean Jackson of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Maine State Police are assisting Bosco.
Pyska said it was not known when further information from the medical examiner’s office would be available.
