Bangor planning board approves slate of projects Airport to rebuild apron, expand terminal

BANGOR – Members of the city’s planning board Tuesday evening quickly dispensed with several items of business before moving into workshop mode to consider open space provisions.

Approved were:

. Site plan changes needed for several improvements at Bangor International Airport on Godfrey Boulevard, including a 16,118-square-foot second-story addition and new stairwell in the Domestic Terminal building and reconstruction of 5.71 acres of the terminal’s apron.

The cost of the expansion project has been pegged at $2.7 million and the apron reconstruction at $2.18 million, according to planning officer David Gould’s background memo for planning board members.

The terminal expansion will be funded through a combination of sources, including the Federal Aviation Administration, which is covering the lion’s share of the cost, as well as the Maine Department of Transportation and the city.

Funding for the apron will come from accrued passenger facility fees.

The airport expects to complete both projects by the end of this year.

. Site plan modifications needed for storm water drainage improvements at the city’s fleet maintenance and public works storage areas, both off Maine Avenue.

At public works, the city will install 15 catch basins with sumps, traps and filters connecting to existing catch basins and the overall drainage system. The new catch basins will capture oil, debris, grit, organic matter and suspended solids, phosphorus, hydrocarbons and heavy metals.

At fleet maintenance, the city will install two new catch basins with sumps, traps and fuel containment structures to capture small gasoline and diesel fuel spills.

The public works improvements are part of a research and design project for the Bangor Area Storm Water Group. The group wants to test the effectiveness of using traps with filters. If successful, the method might be used as part of the city’s larger Birch Stream Water Management Plan.

Cost estimates were not immediately available.

. Site plan modifications needed for the addition of a 400-square-foot restroom facility at the Bangor Fire Department’s training facility off Odlin Road. Maine Fire Training and Education has provided a $35,000 grant for the work.
