Monson fest to test ingenuity

MONSON – The craziest of homemade contraptions will be tested Saturday on Lake Hebron when the Anything Floats Race is held during Monson’s Summer Festival.

Plastic bottles and duct tape are some of the materials strapped together by past participants. Styrofoam, metal and rubber are prohibited. The race begins at 2:30 p.m. with registration before that behind the Lake Shore House. Entry fee is $5.

This year’s festival actually begins at 5 p.m. Friday, July 18, with a softball game at the ball field and ends at 9:15 p.m. Saturday with fireworks.

Saturday’s events will start with the Lake Hebron Slate Man Triathlon at 7:15 a.m. from the Monson Gymnasium. Registration for three-member teams is $30. Participants must be age 16 or older. Prizes will be awarded to the first-place team.

The course will involve running from the Monson Gymnasium ending at Greenleaf landing; kayaking from Greenleaf landing to Town Cove Beach; and cycling from the Town Cove Beach to the gym.

Assorted relay games, a craft fair, a pie judging contest, a performance by a juggler, an open house at the Monson Museum and gift shop, and a book signing will be among the morning’s offerings.

From 1 to 2 p.m. an Elvis impersonator will perform in the town office parking lot. That will be followed later by the alumni banquet, a dance at the Finnish Farmers Club and fireworks.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day.
