About half of all U.S. electricity is generated by coal-burning power plants. The bulk of the coal is taken from strip mines west of the Mississippi. Twenty tons of coal are extracted by each miner each hour. Twenty tons of coal in a modern coal-to-electric plant will generate the electricity needed to keep a Maine household supplied with electricity for six years. Fossil fuel will be a difficult act to follow.
