British Columbia taking bus to Bangor after win

OAKVILLE, Ontario – The Whalley Little League of Surrey, British Columbia, earned its second straight trip to the Senior League World Series on Friday evening by finishing off an unbeaten run through the Canadian championships with a 11-1 victory over Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.

The British Columbia regional representatives went 5-0 in preliminary-round play, then defeated the N.D.G. Senior Lynx of Montreal, Quebec, 10-7 in the semifinal round.

The Canadian champions, from a suburb of Vancouver, outscored their opposition by a combined 86-11 in its seven games at the national tournament.

Glace Bay had advanced to the championship game with a marathon 7-3 victory over the N.D.G. Senior Lynx of Montreal earlier Friday.

That game started Thursday but was suspended with the teams locked in a 1-1 tie through 21/2 innings.

The game resumed Friday, and after a total of six rain delays the Atlantic regional champions earned the victory thanks to a five-run uprising in the sixth inning.

The Canadian champs went 2-2 at the Senior League World Series a year ago, but lost a chance to advance to the semifinals in a three-way tiebreaker. The team that won that tiebreaker, Cartersville, Ga., went on to win the world championship for Little Leaguers ages 14-16.

The Chiefs also went 2-2 in pool play during the 2004 SLWS held in Bangor.

Whalley was scheduled to bus directly from the Canadian championships to Bangor, with an expected arrival around midday today.

The Canadian champs open play in this year’s Senior League World Series at noon Sunday in a Pool A contest against Maine District 3 champion Bangor, the host team for the 10-team, weeklong event.
