Flooding washes out roads in Minot area

Flash flooding in central Maine washed out big chunks of state Routes 119 and 124, prompting the Maine Department of Transportation to close both roads.

Despite the damage no one was injured, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

Bud Santos of Minot said water was coming through the center of town Saturday, covering the town square.

Deputy state Transportation Commissioner Greg Nadeau said it will be days before the state roads are repaired and reopened.

A spokesman at the National Weather Service in Caribou said the Millinocket area had about an hour of heavy rain with thunder and lightning late Saturday afternoon, but no flooding or damage was reported.

BDN writer Meg Haskell and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
