Vinalhaven girls, Greenville boys win island games Teams play games within 24 hours

VINALHAVEN – About 131/2 hours after losing a one-point thriller to Greenville Friday evening, the Vinalhaven girls basketball team wasn’t about to let Saturday morning’s game go without a fight.

And the Vikings certainly didn’t want the Lakers going to the line like they did Friday, when Amber Lavigne hit a free throw with nine seconds left to lift Greenville.

The Lakers looked sharper than the Vikings at the start of the 8:30 a.m. game, but Vinalhaven quickly turned things around and emerged with a 50-36 win over Greenville at the school gymnasium.

In Saturday’s 10 a.m. boys game, the Lakers fed off their emotion from Friday night’s win over the Vikings, which broke Greenville’s five-game losing streak, and earned a 67-44 victory to improve to 10-5.

Freshman Chelsea Osgood tossed in 16 points to lead Vinalhaven and senior Ali Bickford, playing in her final home game since she started playing on the high school team as an eighth-grader, added 13.

Bickford said a defensive change made the difference for the Vikings.

“We played full-court man-to-man in the middle of the game, which we usually only do at the end, and that helped us a lot,” she said. “We denied the ball, we had a lot of steals and man helped us as opposed to a zone.”

Before turning to the man defense the Vikings came out in a zone. The Lakers took advantage, as Kim Folsom’s jumper from the left wing gave Greenville a 10-0 lead with 4:39 left in the first.

But with the defensive switch, Vinalhaven scored 12 unanswered points to end the first quarter and take its first lead of the game.

Greenville’s Justine Lavigne opened the second quarter with a driving layup to tie it up again and Michaella Bartley hit a jumper for a 14-12 Laker edge, but eighth-grader Brianna Osgood tied the game back up for the Vikings.

Later in the second quarter Vinalhaven had a 20-18 lead when Kim Walker put back a rebound for Vinalhaven to spark a 12-1 run to end the first half and give the Vikings a 31-19 lead.

“We were up by 10 so felt very comfortable and I think we thought, now we can have some fun,” Justine Lavigne said. “And when we try to do some fun things, we get too excited and we throw away the ball and turn it over. That’s what happens.”

Vinalhaven scored eight straight points to open the third quarter and held Greenville scoreless until 6-foot center Tiffany Turner made a jumper with 5:06 left.

Foul trouble plagued the Lakers the rest of the way.

Vinalhaven’s Walker chipped in with 11 points and Brianna Osgood added 10.

Justine Lavigne led Greenville with 16 points and Folsom had seven, all in the first quarter.

Both teams are now 2-13.

In the boys game, the Lakers let the Vikings get a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Greenville went to its strengths – the inside game and the fast break – in the second and third quaters.

“We knew we were a lot taller than these guys and we knew I’d pretty much be able to dominate down low so that’s what we did,” said Greenville’s 6-foot-4 Tyler Muzzy.

The Lakers kicked off the second quarter with a 14-0 run. Muzzy scored the first six points when he was fouled twice going to the basket, made the shot and hit the ensuing free throws.

“Wherever Tyler went we wanted to put somebody in front and back, play a zone but front him wherever he went,” Vinalhaven coach Dennis Pratt said. “The kids kind of lost focus sometimes of where he was.”

Brian Campbell made two free throws to put Greenville ahead 20-19, Jonathan Ethier hit two layups in a row and then assisted on a Muzzy basket to go up 26-19 with 5:29 left in the first half.

After Vinalhaven’s Joe Pratt hit a long jumper and Josh Doughty made two free throws, the Lakers reeled off another 14-0 surge to go up 40-24 at halftime.

Ethier scored all 14 of his points in the second quarter and Muzzy had 10 of his game-high 22 in the second. Hans Breton added 10 points for Greenville.

Doughty led Vinalhaven (2-13) with 17 points.
