Town approves budget for school on third try

CAPE ELIZABETH – After rejecting two school budgets, voters in Cape Elizabeth have finally given the green light to a school spending plan.

Unofficial results show that town voters approved the $19.8 million budget Tuesday by a vote of 1,425 to 731. The budget calls for a 5.3 percent increase in spending.

Two earlier versions, one for $19.6 million and the other for $19.9 million, had been rejected in earlier referendums.

Under a new state law, most school budgets approved by governing boards must also be endorsed by voters.
