FORT KENT – Walford Stewart scored with a low shot from the top of the box at the 79:57 mark of the second half to give the University of Maine- Fort Kent a 2-1 men’s soccer win over Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design Wednesday.
Dwayne Smith scored off a Emlyn Jacoby pass in the first half for 3-0 UM-Fort Kent. Giovanni Sinclair made one save on three shots for the nation’s No. 18-ranked team in the NAIA’s first poll.
Dan Fadida converted a penalty kick early in the second half for the 1-3-1 Bees. Robbie Wright made three saves on 13 shots.
Tufts 2, Southern Maine 0
At Gorham, Pat Doherty and Ben Green each scored a goal for the Tufts University Jumbos as they blanked the University of Southern Maine.
David McKeon made five saves on seven shots for the 2-0 Jumbos.
Steve May saved three of six shots for the 3-1-1 Huskies.
Bates 2, UM-Farmington 1
At Lewiston, Dae Ro Lee scored in the second minute of play and the Bates Bobcats benefited from an own goal in the 34th minute to edge the University of Maine-Farmington.
Freshman Greg Watts turned aside seven of 14 shots for the 1-0 Bobcats.
Brian Lemont and Matthew Dennett combined to make 10 saves on 27 shots.
Women’s soccer
UM-Fort Kent 2, MMA 1
At Castine, Whitney Sinclair pounced on a loose ball and chipped it over Lacey Jackson in the 63rd minute to break a 1-1 tie and supply the University of Maine-Fort Kent with its victory over Maine Maritime Academy.
Brianne McGary opened the scoring at the 28-minute mark for UMFK but MMA’s Diana Manatt-Rogers equalized six minutes later by heading a Jess Stahl cross past Kayla Daigle.
Daigle made four saves on 16 shots for 3-0 UMFK while Jackson had three saves on 11 shots for 1-3 MMA.
Colby 3, UM-Farmington 0
At Waterville, Nikki Pickering scored all three goals and Rachel Freierman came up with five saves on nine shots as Colby improved to 2-0.
Meghan Edwards assisted on Pickering’s first goal which came with 12:14 left in the first half.
Mckell Barnes made 16 saves on 28 shots for UMF, which was playing its season-opener.
Field hockey
Bowdoin 5, Husson 0
At Bangor, Lindsay McNamara scored two goals and assisted another as Bowdoin College of Brunswick shutout Husson College.
Kate Gormley had a goal and an assist for the 3-0 Polar Bears. Madeleine McQueeney and Tamlyn Frederick also scored. Emileigh Mercer and Emily Neilson combined in goal. Neilson stopped and faced one shot. Mercer did not see a shot.
Kara Voisine made 15 saves on 20 shots for 0-1 Husson.
Endicott 2, UM-Farmington 0
At Farmington, Cara Hanrahan and Caitlin Keating scored first-half goals to lift Endicott College over the University of Maine at Farmington.
Lindsey Mills assisted Hanrahan’s goal for 4-1 Endicott. Endicott’s goalie made six saves.
Kaeleigh Barker made nine saves for 0-3 UM-Farmington.
New England 4, Thomas 0
At Henniker, N.H., Jodie Dresser scored two goals and provided an assist to push the New England College past Thomas College of Waterville.
Elise Luccarelli and Brianna Gerrior added goals for 5-0 New England College. Mary Roux had three saves.
Amy Miles blocked nine shots for 1-2 Thomas.
