3 injured in accident at Sanford rug maker

SANFORD – Three workers were hurt at a rug-making plant Thursday morning when they were pinned by equipment that tipped over in a second-floor loom area.

The injured Flemish Master Weavers workers were treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital, according to Jim Stuart, the company’s personnel and safety officer.

Stuart said a 7-foot-tall creel tipped over and pinned the workers. A creel is a rack that holds spools used in weaving.

The other workers were evacuated and the business was shut down for the day.

Officials from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on the scene and said the plant could reopen Friday, according to Stuart. He said a decision about whether to open Friday hadn’t yet been made.

About 50 employees were at work in the plant, which manufactures area rugs. The company used to be known as Rainbow Rugs.
